Director Masahide Yamaguchi has been appointed as 특임교수 (Distinguished
Professor) of Department of Physics, Yonsei University, from 2025.04.01.
Director Yamaguchi plans to have graduate students from Yonsei University.
First, for students to join Yonsei's graduate school, they need to apply for
the graduate program of Yonsei University. The most suitable option would be
the integrated Master-PhD track (석박통합과정).
Admissions open twice a year:
Fall intake (for a September start): Unfortunately, the application period
for this year has just closed (April 9–16, 2025).
Spring Schedule Link
Spring intake (for a March 2026 start): The next application window will
be October 10–15, 2025.
Fall Schedule Link
If the students are admitted, and if they choose to join "Prof. Seongchan Park"
group by requesting that they would like to join Director Yamaguchi's group
effectively, Prof. Park will serve as the official supervisor and Director
Yamaguchi can be the co-supervisor. But, Director Yamaguchi will supervise
such graduate students effectively, though Prof. Park's group and Director
Yamaguchi's group will often interact each other.
During the first three years, they are required to complete a certain number of
course credits. While they typically begin research projects early on,
coursework remains a priority during this period. After completing their
coursework, they can fully dedicate themselves to research for an additional
2–3 years at the CTPU-CGA of the IBS.
Most (if not all) students receive financial support through various fellowships
provided by Yonsei, such as the Brain Korea (BK) program, and also through
the CTPU-CGA of the IBS while they are registered as student research
assistants. However, students are also encouraged to work as teaching
assistants (TAs) during their coursework period due to limited financial support
and the opportunity to gain teaching experience.
Students can stay in Daejeon during the summer (mid-June to end of August)
and winter (mid-December to end of February) breaks even during the first
three years. Even during the semester, students will interact with Director
Yamaguchi through (online) textbook reading and so on. Once they complete
the required coursework, they can relocate to Daejeon permanently, as no
further class attendance is needed.
As the next admission cycle targets the academic year starting in March
2026, prospective students should prepare to apply by October.
Candidates are encouraged to apply for the *MS–PhD integrated
program*, which will allow our Brain Korea program to provide fellowship
support for the first two to three years—essentially, during their
coursework period.
One last but important notice is that the students are expected to comply with
both Yonsei and IBS regulations.
